Elmore “Moe” Wallin

Moe was born in Aberdeen, Washington on February 2, 1932, and died on September 15, 2012, in Seattle, Washington. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen near the top of his class and was Faculty Speaker. He received a four-year scholarship to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where he was editor of the newspaper and received his B. S. degree. From Hopkins he went to Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York where he earned his Master’s degree.

He returned to the West Coast and worked for the Seattle Times newspaper until his military service with the U.S. Coast Guard. After sea duty with the Coast Guard, he became the Public Relations Officer for the 13th Coast Guard District. His next step was going to work for the Boeing Company as a Technical Writer and when he retired he was the Manager of Graphics for Boeing Aerospace. After retiring, he became an enthusiastic gardener at the Interbay P-Patch.


Henry Soike

Longtime Grays Harbor resident Henry Eugene Soike passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening October 3, 2012, after a brief illness. He was 91. His wife Dorothy passed away this past May. He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia of Vancouver and Claire of Portland; sons, Steven of Bellevue, David & Tina of Bellevue; and four grandchildren, Layne, Bryan, Derek & Adrianne, and Michael. Henry’s surviving sisters-in-law are Gerry Soike of Seattle and Virginia Tibbals of Berkeley, along with many nieces and nephews.

Henry was born in Portage, Vashon Island on September 24, 1921. His parents contributed land and helped build the Center Grade School next door to their family home. He skipped a grade to join the same class with his two beloved twin siblings, Clifford II “Bud” and Claire who have now passed away. They graduated from Vashon High School in 1938. While attending the UW during the war, he helped test Boeing B-29 bomber models in the Kirsten Wind Tunnel. Henry graduated in 1942 with a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Gary Michael Furth

Our dear brother Gary went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 28. Gary was born on October 27, 1947, to Fabian and Jessie Furth who preceded him in death.

Gary is survived by his siblings, Deanna Anderson, Patty Sheerer, Mary Jane Turner, Peggy Ernst, Karen Furth, David Furth, Colleen Furth-Ortiz and Ann Furth. He also had MANY nieces and nephews and great- nieces and nephews. Gary was very loved by his family and will be missed. Rest in peace brother Gary.

Arlayne Louise (Matthews) Odle

Arlayne Odle a lifetime resident of Ocosta, Washington passed away on October 8, 2012, with her daughters by her side. She was born October 10, 1929, in Markham, Washington. She is preceded in death by her father, Clarence (Bud) Matthews; her mother, Esther (Gotchy) Persson; and her husband, Eldon Claude Odle. Eldon and Arlayne were married on September 19, 1950 in Grayland, Washington.

Arlayne graduated from Ocosta High School in 1948 and from Grays Harbor Community College with a degree in Liberal Arts in 1950. Arlayne was a contestant in the 1948 Miss Twin Harbors Beach Pageant. She worked for many years in Westport as a waitress and later as a crab shaker. She retired from Washington Crab Producers at age 62. She was a member of the choir and served on the board for Twin Harbors Baptist Church for many years.

Steven James Russell, a lifetime resident of South Bend, passed peacefully, in the loving arms of his family on Friday, October 12, 2012, at the family home. Steve was born on September 8, 1949, in South Bend, Washington to Lester Hugh and Margaret Ann ( Remington) Russell. He married Gayle Walker September 17, 1982, in Raymond. Steve and Gayle made their home in South Bend, where they raised their three sons.

Steve earned his Bachelors of Arts in Education from Central Washington University and went to work in many different fields. He was a special education school teacher in South Bend and drove school bus. He worked for UPS as a delivery manager for 18 years and later worked for Weyerhaeuser and Sunset Air. Steve most recently worked as the City of South Bend Supervisor, where he worked for the past 8 years. Steve, along with his wife, owned and operated the Dairy Queen for nine and an half years.

Sidney R. (Sid) Snyder

Sidney R. (Sid) Snyder, age 86, passed away on October 14, 2012, at his home in Long Beach.

He was born in Kelso on July 30, 1926, to Adahlena Beeman Snyder and Edwin Alfonso Snyder and was the youngest of four sons. He was a graduate of Kelso High School, served briefly in the Army Air Corps and attended Lower Columbia College.

OLYMPIA — Former Harborite Roberta C. Brown died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, in Olympia. She was 89.

She lived in Aberdeen for 20 years before moving to Ellensburg. Two years ago due to health problems Roberta moved to Olympia.

Daniel C. (Dave) Ashlock

Daniel C. (Dave) Ashlock, a South Bend resident, died Monday, October 15, 2012, at St. Peters Hospital in Olympia, he was 79. He was born February 10, 1933, in Olympia, Washington, to Charles William and Adella (Justus) Ashlock.

He married his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Crosskill on June 8, 1962 in Tacoma, Wash. She survives him at the family home in South Bend. Dave was a member of the V.F.W. Post #968, American Legion, Raymond Elks and the Lebam Community Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and loved watching his grandkids sporting events.

David Alexander Gitcho

David Alexander Gitcho, 63, a seventeen year resident of Ocean Shores, died at his home there Friday morning, October 12, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Granite City, Illinois on January 8, 1949, the son of Chris and Dorothy (Constantine) Gitcho. He graduated from high school in Granite City and served in the Army from 1973-76.

David came to Olympia originally in 1972 and was married there to Charolette Buchmann in 1980. He owned Gitcho’s Discount Center in Lacey for several years before selling the store and coming to Ocean Shores in 1999. He continued with Discount Depot in Ocean Shores until the present.

Lawrence Elton Sims of Aberdeen passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital on Sunday, October 14, 2012. He was 61. Larry was born December 2, 1950, in Hot Springs, Arkansas to Claude and Margaret (Bandy) Sims.

Larry was raised in Hot Springs and also lived in California where he graduated from Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia.

Our Beloved and Cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of many, Peggy Kirk (Puggy) was called home by our Lord Jesus, with whom she dedicated her life and career, peacefully in the comfort of her own bed at home with her husband at her side on October 12, 2012. Peggy’s life began in Everett, Washington on May 20, 1927. She grew up in Medford, Oregon with her parents Grover and Bea Corum, and her two siblings Jim and Dick Corum. Peggy was the wife of James Kirk, her husband of 43 years; and the mother of Tony, John, Heidi, Paul, Grace, Kristina, Cheryl, and Lynnell.

Peggy’s educational accomplishments include Medford High School with honors, Northwest Bible College, B.A. Suma Cum Laude, B.A. in Counseling, Masters Degree in Practical Theology, Doctor of Biblical Literature and family counseling: Divinity School of Practical Theology in Evansville, Ind. GPA 4.0 with honors.

John H. Mitchell

John H. Mitchell died of congestive heart failure October 14, 2012, in Gresham, Oregon, at the age of 91. He was born in Greenfield, Missouri and spent his childhood near Dove Creek, Colo.

John attended Carbon College in Price, Utah. He also attended the University of Utah but left formal education to work for the New Remington Arms Plant in Salt Lake City, Utah until he was transferred to the E.I. DuPont Corp. to work on the secret U.S. Government project at Hanford, Wash.

Kelly Patrick O’Brien of Tacoma passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at his mother’s home in Hoquiam. He was 33 years old. Kelly was born in Seattle on May 11, 1979, to Richard and Cathy (Paris) O’Brien. He graduated from West Seattle High School in 1997. He then went on to be an auto mechanic at Walt’s Auto Care Center for 15 years.

Kelly was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He loved to work on cars and play video games. Kelly was also a collector of knives and guns.

John A. “Jack” Burkhalter

John A. “Jack” Burkhalter, a lifetime Raymond resident, died Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle; he was 88. Jack was born October 26, 1923, in Raymond to Louis A. and Lena K. (Wiss) Burkhalter.

He graduated from Willapa Valley High School and made a career of Dairy Farming. He married Lois E. Poole in 1948; she preceded him in death January 2, 1982. Jack later married Betty Vaughn in 1990. She survives him at the family home in Raymond.

Sharon M. Stoken, 66 and a resident of Hoquiam, Washington, died on Friday, October 12, 2012, at her home in Hoquiam with her family around her. Sharon was born on April 24, 1946, in Aberdeen to Fay Ellis and Elaine (Borek) Ambrose.

She moved with her family to Alaska, Georgia and back to Hoquiam in 1963 where she attended and graduated from Hoquiam High School.

Luella Mae Wilppone, 94, a longtime Aberdeen resident and former Medical Records Director for Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, died on Sunday, October 7, 2012, at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam.

Luella was born on January 26, 1918, in Marnie, Iowa to Heinz and Lois (Marvin) Duncan. They moved to Aberdeen when she was 8 and she has lived here since then. Luella graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1936 and then later was in the first graduating class of LPN’s from Grays Harbor College. Luella married Leo Wilppone in Aberdeen in 1938, he died in 1963.

An informal celebration of life for longtime Harborite Barbara Jo Northup, who died Oct. 10 in Aberdeen, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Taholah school gym.
