Richard A. Wilson

Richard A. Wilson, 86, of Chico, Calif., peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on September 1, 2012.

He was born in Aberdeen, on August 18, 1926. Richard was a World War II Veteran serving in the Navy from 1943-1947. Richard owned and operated R.A. Wilson Electrical Maintenance Inc. for nearly 50 years in the San Francisco Bay area, until he and Ellie, his wife of 62 years, retired to Chico in 1991. His passion was playing golf and he was awarded special recognition by the Enterprise Record in April of 2010 for achieving his 38th Hole in One! He was also an avid fisherman, a lifetime member of the Elks Club, a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Dana (Glasscock) McClansburgh passed away suddenly on September 8, 2012. Dana was born in Seattle, October 10, 1970. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, Earl and Peggy Glasscock; and a step-brother Gary Palella.

Dana moved to Hoquiam in 1977, where she graduated from Hoquiam High school in 1989. She moved to the Duvall area in 1993.

Russell Verne Leonard

Russell Verne Leonard, age 66, a resident of Hoquiam, died on September 11, 2012, at his home in Hoquiam. He was born on May 13, 1946 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to James R. and Geraldine M. (Savage) Leonard. He was the youngest of four including his twin brother.

Russ was an athlete, winning state championships in baseball and wrestling. While attending Lexington Baptist College, he met his future wife, Marion Rowe. After marrying Marion in 1968, they moved to the state of Washington and started their family.

NEAL E. GERBER

Neal E. Gerber, a longtime Tokeland resident died Saturday, September 8, 2012, at his home. He was born January 25, 1941, in Chehalis, Washington, to Gilbert and Maude (Houston) Gerber. Neal married Melody Fettis October 15, 1966, in Centralia. They resided in Chehalis for 29 years before moving to Tokeland. While in Chehalis, Neal worked for the Co-Op School District in Centralia as a shop foreman. He enjoyed any type of work. He was a true handyman and a great mechanic; he enjoyed building 1960s and 70s racecars. A sign on Neal’s garage door read “World’s Greatest Lawnmower Man”, which is what he was referred to throughout the South Beach area. Neal was also known as the king of watching trashy T.V., he loved Jerry Springer! His family called him the sweetest, most gentle giant; he will be greatly missed.

Neal is survived by his wife, Melody of Tokeland; a daughter, Melissa Gerber; a son, Garth Gerber (Vickie Simera) all of Tokeland; two brothers, Alvin Gerber of Vancouver and Carl Gerber of Centralia; two grandchildren, Zoey and Gage; and numerous nieces and nephews. Neal’s two special friends, Teke and Wendy, the family dogs, also survive him. He was preceded in death by sisters, Doris and Ruth.

Carol Ann Mariano

Carol Ann Mariano, 64, after a short battle with cancer was called to be with the Lord on August 24, 2012. She passed peacefully at the University of Washington Medical Center surrounded by her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband and soul mate, Bruce; her four children, Robert (Karla), Heather (Craig), Nikki (Jeremy) and Amy; and her seven grandchildren. Carol was adopted by Stanley (Bud) and Roselie Goedker of Willapa, Wash., where she and her brother, Kenneth spent most of their childhoods. They moved to Aberdeen when she was a teen and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1966. She met Bruce in 1968, and they married in 1970. They moved to the greater Seattle area where they spent the next 42 years raising their children. Some of her favorite things besides her family were reading, needle point, potlucks and driving around, exploring different places with Bruce.

In honor of her memory we will be holding a potluck memorial at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at Lake Hills Baptist Church, 506 140th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98005, 425-747-2770

Robert Lee Smith, 87, died on September 12, 2012, in Olympia, surrounded by his family. Robert was born in Kansas. Robert proudly served in World War II, as a United States Marine.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Smith of McCleary; sister, Melba Wheeler of Concordia, Kansas; brother, Arnold Smith of Olympia; son, Rocky Smith and wife, Terry of Olympia; daughters, Terry and husband, Jim of Kenai, Alaska, Julie and husband, John of McCleary, Marilea and husband, Grieg of Stephenville, Texas, Rhonda and husband, Zane of Wyoming and Ranita and husband, Doug of Florida; sons, Rick and wife, Eunice of Idaho and Randy of South Bend; grandsons, Rob, Jason, Lenny, Nicolas, Joshua, Aaron, Travis, Rick, and Ryan, granddaughters, Janice, Carrie, Rachael, Shawna, Wannette, Madalon, Elaine, Amber, Autumn, Amy, Christina, Csinya and Hannah; 38 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren

Aberdeen resident Lawanna Hines passed away on Monday, August 27, 2012. Lawanna was born on October 31, 1927.

She had Lawanna’s Tea Room in Cosmopolis for many years. She was also an artist and loved to paint, play bingo, go on outings and have picnics.

Early Wednesday morning, September 5, 2012, Brian Matthews passed away graciously as he was embraced by his loving daughter, Jonni Anderson. He had been battling liver cancer. He had found out that he had three small tumors on his liver about a year and a half ago.

Brian was in the comfort of his own home in Ocean Shores. Even though he lived in Ocean Shores his heart was always in Seattle. That was his true home. That is where he met the love of his life, Marcy Morin and that is where he adopted Marcy and her family. He had spent some time living in Anchorage, Alaska and Yakima.

Lifelong Harbor resident, Harold Alfred Schultz, passed away peacefully at his home in Aberdeen on August 15, 2012. He was born in Burlington, North Dakota on November 26, 1925 to Clarence and Anna (Joyce) Schultz. The family moved to Aberdeen in 1927 where he remained until his death.

Harold served in the Army in Europe during World War II. He worked at ITT Rayonier from 1955 until his retirement in 1987.

Aina Sylvia Wisner passed away in her home in Menlo on September 8, 2012, surrounded by her family. She had just celebrated her 80th birthday with her husband and children. One week prior, a family reunion yielded 60+ family and friends at the homestead.

Aina was born in New Jersey on September 1, 1932, to Olaf and Magnhil (Torvik) Johnsen. She was raised in Norway until after the war when her family returned to the United States. She graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1950.

Janice Mae Luce, age 78, passed away September 4, 2012, at The Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, WA, where she was treated with loving care and dignity. She was born March 21, 1934 in Hoquiam, to Dena Louise and Norman Clair Godfrey. Janice grew up in Hoquiam where she and her sisters were a mischievous team. Their escapades were some of her fondest childhood memories. In 1949, the family moved to Toledo, OR, where she graduated from high school in 1952. She soon moved back to Hoquiam, the town she loved her entire life.

Janice was a strong, hardworking and thrifty homemaker before opening her own business in 1983. With her “can do” attitude she owned and operated 7th St. Consignment in Hoquiam for 20 years. A champion for the underprivileged, Jan was humbled when she was nominated for the city’s Citizen of the Year award. Soon after leaving 7th St. Consignment, she was anxious to get back to work and interact with friends in the community. In 2005, Jan and sister, Mary Whitehall, opened Finders Keepers Thrift Shop in Hoquiam. Medical challenges in 2009, forced her into retirement, but her stubborn determination and fierce independence remained.

Kathleen Joanne Smith

Kathleen Joanne Smith, age 73, a resident of Elma, Washington died on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at Mark Reed Hospital in McCleary. Kathleen was born on January 17, 1939, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to John J. and Minnie Mae (Baker) Spisak. She graduated from high school in Lancaster, Calif., at the age of 18. Kathleen Joanne was married to Floyd G. Smith on November 28, 1957. The couple lived in North Hollywood, Calif., until moving to Satsop, Wash., in 1972. Floyd Smith died in 1993.

Kathleen Smith had worked as a registered nurse at the Aberdeen St. Joseph Hospital, in California hospitals and at the Beehive Retirement Center in McCleary. She served as the secretary - treasurer for the Matlock Fire Department and secretary - treasurer for River Haven Housing Commission in Mason County. For some four years she had been a foster parent.

Robin Charles Burmester

Robin Burmester died peacefully at his home in Humptulips, on September 7, 2012, with his family by his side after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. Robin was born on July 18, 1935 to Raymond and Jennie (Robbins) Burmester in Clinton, Iowa. The family moved to Red Wing, Minn.,when Robin was young where he grew-up and went to school. He came to Grays Harbor at the age of 22 after serving in the National Guard. He was first employed in a logging camp and then the chair factory and pulp mill before going to work for ITT Rayonier. Robin was a heavy equipment operator for Rayonier for 24 years. He joined the IWA Local 3-2 union early in his career and was a loyal and dedicated member where he served in many capacities including President. His work in the union led him to become the Vice President of the Washington State Labor Council. He was a champion for the rights of working men and women and their families. Robin married the love of his life, Marylou Ellingson on November 23, 1970, in Montesano. They raised their family in New London (Hoquiam) until retiring to the family ranch in Humptulips in 1988. In retirement he continued to volunteer for the union and community and was always there for his family, friends and neighbors with a helping hand. At the family ranch Robin enjoyed caring for his horses and donkeys and he especially enjoyed the yearly haying of his fields. He was at home on his tractor. Robin was an avid fisherman where he enjoyed not only fishing on the Humptulips River that runs along his property but also enjoyed traveling to his home state of Minnesota and to Canada to fish with his brothers and friends. Robin enjoyed music and was a member of the S.E. Minnesota Blue Grass Association. He attended blue grass festivals with his brother Richard for many years in Minnesota. Robin also enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife and family. They traveled to many beautiful places including National and Historical Parks. His favorite places to visit where to Minnesota and especially his many excursions to Yellowstone. He was a geyser gasser, rock hound, and gold panner. Robin was also very artistic with several painting hanging in the family home. Robin was a loving husband to Marylou; a best friend and loving father to his daughter, Cathy; a loving father to Daniel, Lori, and Randy; and the best grandpa to his loving grandchildren, Erica, Robin (namesake), Carlos, Casandra, Orlando, Clorissa, and Ali. Robin will be remembered for his kind, caring, and generous ways. He is loved very much and will be greatly missed by all. Robin is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marylou; his daughters, Cathy (Carl) Cozad & Lori (Angel) Garcia; his sons, Daniel (Joni) Burmester & Randy Burmester; his grandchildren, Erica and Robin Cozad, Carlos, Casandra, and Orlando Garcia, and Clorissa Burmester. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard and Donny Burmester, and Jerry Novek; sister, Joan Bundy; and aunt, Josie Grabow. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, June Novek, and Mary Sandford; and step-son, Steve Major.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday September 22, 2012, at the family home in Humptulips. All family and friends are welcome. Donations can be made to The American Cancer Society, 1313 Broadway Ste 100, Tacoma, Washington 98402.

She is preceded in death by her fathe, Floyd Wisner; and son, Jimmy Jr. She is survived by her children, Nate, Becky, Harold, Colleen Jr. and Merrill Rath.

Sophanny Tiffany Yon, 20, a student at Grays Harbor College and 2010 graduate of J.M. Weatherwax High School, died on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Tiffany was born on August 9, 1992, in Olympia, Washington to Ngek Yon and Sokun Pas. She was attending Grays Harbor College and would have graduated this spring. She loved school and enjoyed helping out at Robert Gray Elementary in their After School Program.

Charlene Alvira Callen, 79, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, after a long illness. She was born on May 14, 1933, in Aberdeen to Charles and Margaret Ouellette.

Charlene is survived by her husband of 62 years, Harold Callen at the family home in Aberdeen; son, Dale Callen of California; three brothers, Chuck Ouellette (deceased), Fred and his wife, Judy Ouellette, and Robin Ouellette; three granddaughters of California and two great-grandchildren.

Gaylin Dea Bernard, 61 years of age and a longtime Hoquiam area resident, passed away peacefully at her home on September 25, 2012, after a brief illness. Dea was born on August 7, 1951, in Vancouver, Washington, to Robert and Marsha (Shirey) Symank.

Dea attended schools in the Portland, Oregon area and following her high school graduation she joined the US Navy and was a Vietnam era veteran. While serving with the Navy she was a payroll accountant.
