Alfred F. Camp

Alfred F. Camp, a long time Aberdeen resident, passed away on April 7, 2013, at the age of 87. He died peacefully while under hospice care at the Home Place Special Care Center in Burlington. Born in Tacoma, he was raised on the family farm in Sumner until his father’s death when the family moved to Tacoma. Alfred was 13 when his mother passed and shortly thereafter found himself working in a logging camp in Aberdeen where he quickly went from cook’s helper to whistle punk.

At the onset of World War II he joined the service. He served with honor during World War II with the USMC 7th Fleet aboard the USS California receiving the following in recognition of his service: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 bronze stars and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. After receiving a medical discharge from the Marine Corp., he continued to serve with the U.S. Army Medical Corp. in the Special Metabolic Research Unit at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. He was an active member of the VFW in Montesano.
