James W. “Jim” Oestreich, passed away quietly on February 23, 2014, in Olympia. He was born in Seattle on October 23, 1931, to Lee and Jerelda Oestreich, and in 1946, the family moved to Portland, Ore., and then to Hoquiam later that year. He also met his future wife while in Hoquiam. He graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1950, and Grays Harbor College in 1952. He went on to complete his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Washington State College in 1954, and was instantly offered a position at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center in Calif., to work at the Michelson Lab, a research center devoted to developing air-to-air missiles.
